Strong Women Stay Young

A Book Review

A few years ago I read of a neat study done by Tufts University that discovered a way to get huge results with post-menopausal women. They biologically reversed their years -- making them 15 to 20 years younger. That's hot. If it were a drug, they would have made a fortune. I'm guessing that the program will make my work with patients 2-3 times more effective, which means they won't have to see me as often. Pretty cool.

Here's the discovery. Weight training twice a week and you transform lots of physical indicators of health and aging: Bone density gets better, injuries from osteoporosis go down, balance improves, flexibility improves, people get trimmer -- more muscle less fat, strength goes up, happiness goes up and self confidence blooms. In four weeks you'll notice a difference in a year you'll have a new life.

Although the weight training on its own is not adequate for aerobic fitness, the strength, the energy, and self-confidence derived from the weight training makes aerobic exercise easier to do and for many it helps them to eliminate their resistance and start doing aerobics.

There are only eight exercises, and they are simple to do and require minimum equipment and time. One of the things I like is that you can do the exercises with whatever you are wearing. No sweat. The book Strong Women Stay Young by Miriam Nelson, Ph.D. is simply written and illustrated. It's very friendly. She tells you everything you need to know, and she has strategies for handling the "I don't wanna's" that will inevitably hit. She even knows when they'll hit and what they'll look like. Forewarned is forearmed. She gives you all you need to be successful with your program.

What about men? This program will work well for them, too, on the whole however, their need is not as great. I have started it and enjoy it.
